Despite being a comic-book reader in my teens, I managed to remain oblivious to "The Watchmen" until I saw the ads for the movie. It looked like the kind of film I'd enjoy, and, the more I read, the more and more that seemed to be the case. But, before I review the site, there is something I should confess.
There are two things that are almost guaranteed to heigthen the movie watching experience for me. The first is to watch the movie on my own; the second is to watch the movie in the afternoon. I can hazard a guess that watching the movie on my own allows me to focus my undivided attention, and this is a good thing. Why watching films in the afternoon should have a positive impact, I don't know. But it's true. Three films spring immediately to mind that gave me an almost epiphanistic feeling on conclusion and all were watched in the afternoon. Interview With The Vampire, eXistenZ and now The Watchmen.
I actually skipped work one Monday afternoon to see The Watchmen because I believed the cinema was going to end screenings that week and I really wanted to see it. Unfortunately, an hour and a quarter into the film (of about 2hrs 40mins in total), the cinema suffered a catastrophic power failure that meant I couldn't watch the end of the film. I was distraught. I'd been enjoying the film, not really sure what was going to happen (it felt like it hadn't even started by that point). And now I thought I was going to miss it, at least at the cinema, forever.
Fortunately, when the usher gave me my free pass to see the movie again, she was able to confirm that the movie would continue for another couple of weeks...PHEW! So, I returned on Thursday afternoon to watch the film again.
The second time was no less enjoyable. It did feel to me like the movie didn't really get going until about half way through, but I don't think it affected my enjoyment overall. Seeing the build up twice could even have added to it as there's quite a lot to take in.
When the movie finished I really didn't know what to think. It wasn't a typical comic-book adaptation. I couldn't really digest the whole thing at first, but I was reasonably sure that it was my new favourite movie. If I'd watched this when I was a kid then it certainly would be my all time #1. Strange that this isn't a title that gets moved much in older age, but I think this might (one month later and I'm still not sure).
It's unlikely you'll get the chance, but, if you get the opportunity to see this movie in a cinema and haven't before, do it! Go on your own, in the afternoon, too.
